Main Responsibilities

As Web-GIS Developer you will be responsible for:

  • to develop and maintain a new digital Web information platform, with crossbrowser and multi-platform compatibility. to develop and to adapt web interfaces for map visualization and Web-GIS analysis,
  • to develop and implement Web-GIS data dissemination tools and processing via Python, Mapserver, Geoserver and leaflet,
  • to develop web-services for viewing of forest cover data and for country-region specific reporting

Successful Candidate

The level required is ‘Application Architect Level 1’ with specific experience in the area
of web-based Information Systems, including spatial data.

General expertise

  • Specialist for designing and developing web-based databases and information systems, with experience in managing spatial data layers.
  • Capability of working in an international/multicultural environment and working in a team.

Specific expected expertise

  • experience in designing and developing the implementation of IS technical architecture,
  • technical knowledge in designing and maintaining databases in PostgreSQL,
  • strong technical knowledge and experience (i) in web and scripting Object Oriented languages (Python), (ii) in web-based standards and technologies (Vue.js, CSS, JavaScript, JSON), as well as (iii) in web services (REST) and OGC Geographical Web Services (WMS, WFS, WPS),
  • good skills in (i) geographical data modelling, management and analysis (vector and raster, formats like ESRI shp, GeoTiff, PNG, NetCDF, HDF, Erdas Imagine), (ii) scripting languages (Python), (iii) GIS software and tools (ESRI ArcMap and extensions, GDAL/OGR, QuantumGIS, GRASS GIS), and (iv) in developing and managing webGIS with MapServer, Geoserver, Leaflet, Mapbox, GeoExt and PostGIS,
  • proficiency in writing quality code: cross-browser and multi-platform compatibility, optimization and compression (for slow connections), under revision control systems (Git). Good debugging capabilities are an advantage,
  • ability in working in a heterogeneous and structured IT infrastructure, with remote resources and using various protocols (e.g. SFTP, SSH),
  • skills in setting up and configuring web-servers (Apache HTTP Server and Tomcat), databases and webGIS servers on Linux machines,
  • good knowledge in production of technical documentation (UML) and presentation,
  • good experience in setting up, running and (remotely) managing web-based databases within IT environments,
  • Experience in the use of 'docker' technology
  • the capability of integration in a multicultural/multilingual research working environment is expected,
  • fluent English language spoken and written is required.
