Mission Analyst (HERACLES)

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Mission Analyst (HERACLES) based at ESOC.

Role Responsibility

The successful candidate will be responsible for Mission Analysis for Heracles mission . Within his/her main responsibilities to make sure the mission are aligned with the key milestones the following are the key tasks:

  • Trajectory Optimisation focusing on the three body problem especially in the Sun-Earth and the Earth-Moon three body system.
  • Navigation and Guidance for Mission Analysis
  • Concurrent Design Studies for space missions
  • Mission Analysis Tools Development, environmental models, numerical integration techniques, local and global optimisation techniques and algorithms
  • Mission Analysis for human spaceflight beyond the Earth orbit

Successful Candidate

The ideal candidate should bring the following skills and experience:


  • University degree in a relevant engineering field, astronomy, mathematics or physics
  • Skills to apply the knowledge to develop solutions to technical (mathematical and dynamical) problems
  • Ability to define, implement, validate and operate software using e.g. Unix and/or Linux scripting languages, Fortran 77 and/or 95, C++
  • Experience in Trajectory Optimisation focusing on the three-body-problem especially in the Sun Earth and the Earth-Moon three-body-systems,
  • Experience in Navigation and Guidance techniques for Mission Analysis activities,
  • Experience with Concurrent Design Studies for space missions,
  • Experience in Mission Analysis Tools Development, environmental models, numerical integration techniques, local and global optimisation techniques and algorithms,
  • Knowledge about operational and ground segment aspect in the mission/architecture design,
  • Knowledge about the special requirements of human spaceflight beyond the Earth orbit. 
  • Take operational responsibility in multi-discipline teams
  • Fluency in English, both in speech and writing
  • Ability to work independently


  • Familiarity with interplanetary satellite orbital mechanics
  • Experience dealing with external interfaces
  • Experience with Oracle/Solaris and/or Linux, network services and protocols, and system administration
  • The ability to multi-task efficiently; working on multiple activities, multiple subsystems and if applicable multiple missions simultaneously
