Dedicated to the European Space Agency’s Earth-observing activities, ESA-ESRIN is the European centre of excellence for exploitation of Earth observation missions. The mission and payload operations of ESA's Earth observation satellites are managed here, and ESRIN is the primary source for the acquisition, distribution, and exploitation of data from these and other non-ESA satellites.
Serco Italy has a long history of providing Earth Observation operations, maintenance and front-end services to ESA. As Atmospheric Earth Observation Data Engineer you will be responsible for:
You will have the opportunity to support the FORUM PDGS Project Manager, covering all aspects related to Product Definition, Operational Processors and Production Model. It spans from phase B/C to phase E1.
The scope of work will include:
Engineering support to the PDGS Operational Processors’ technical officer for the:
- Preparation of managerial documentation (e.g. implementation plan)
- Preparation of Operational Processors requirements documents
- Preparation of contractual documentation (e.g. SoWs)
- Management/coordination and monitoring of industries responsible for the development of Operational Processors
Coordination of reviews:
- Support to PDGS specifications relevant to the processing functionality ( e.g. TN, product definitions,…)
- Support the acceptance by the PDGS Project of PDGS external CFIs
- Review of documentation from various sources: ESA and Industry, during the project phases dealing with sub-systems implementation and testing
- Participation to Ground Segment Reviews and PDGS reviews organised either by ESA or by Industry
- Management of the review item discrepancies, system or software problem reports and action linked to PDGS Sub-Systems implementation contracts
- Generation of technical notes whenever needed during the relevant project phases
- Operations of the various supporting tools relevant to the processing functionality
- Support to the PDGS Integration, Validation and Ground Segment Validation phases addressing for the relevant processing functionality:
- Support the integration of the processors within processing centre
- Definition of integration and validation tests
- Run of integration and validation tests procedures
- Test results analysis
- Test reporting
- Support for definition and documentation of the PDGS Commissioning Implementation Plan and procedures for the relevant processing functionality
- Support definition and review of products Quality Control and Instruments Monitoring baselines
- Support for processing algorithms definition and review
- Support to the definition of the utilisation of data from the space segment level testing and to the definition of space to ground interface tests for the processors
- Support to products format definition
- Ad-hoc development of tools for the accomplishment of the PDGS testing and validation

Successful Candidate
Your skills:
- University degree or equivalent qualification, preferably in Remote Sensing and Earth Observation
- Good understanding of and background in geophysical sciences and/or specific instruments relevant to the FORUM mission (atmospheric applications and spectrometer knowledge)
- Experience in instrument and data monitoring
- Experience in data quality control
- Experience in operational processors development
- Experience in calibration activities
- Fluent English language (oral and written)
- Autonomous in writing technical notes, specifications and reports in English
- Good inter-personal skills and team spirit
The following skills would be highly desirable:
- Knowledge of the ESA Earth Explorers missions (and instruments) and processes related to their PDGS development
- Programming skills to develop tools for the purpose of engineering, testing and validation activities
- Knowledge of containerization technologies and virtual environment
- Knowledge of the ECSS standards and documentation and configuration control management techniques
- The candidates must be eligible to work in EU and available to work on-site from Frascati

About Serco
Serco manages the Earth Observation technical infrastructure at ESA's European Space Research Institute (ESRIN), which includes the Data Centre; Earth Observation Data Preservation systems; Antenna and associated Laboratory; the Control Room for Earth Observation Payloads (CREOP); and the Virtual Reality Theatre.
This managed service is part of the wider Earth Observation Payload Data Network through which ESA’s Earth Observation data is distributed worldwide.
