Role Responsibility

For our activities at the European Space Operations Centre, we are currently seeking to employ a highly motivated and enthusiastic Network Support Engineer to work in an exciting innovative international environment.

The role will be part of a Network Operations Centre (NOC), responsible for providing 1st and 2nd line IT support to the ESA space missions and its users.

The NOC provides Ground Operations, Operational IT and Operational Control Centre services and acts as single point of contact for real-time service requests from ESTRACK customers.

As (Senior) Network Support Engineer you will concentrate your activities on the following:

  • LAN support of the on-site local area network/ground stations.
  • WAN support of the wide area network connecting to sites all over the world via MPLS and IPSec connectivity
  • Network services, security services (Firewalls, voice services, Cisco AAA and Network Timing Protocol support.
  • Provide 2nd line support for all elements in the ESA Operational Network.
  • Use ITSM tools to respond to incidents and change requests and document all events leading to the resolution within the targets defined in the Service Level Agreements.
  • Liaise with 1st and 3rd line support groups in speedy resolution of incidents and problems.
  • Organise and carry out the installation of equipment into all areas following company standards.
  • Perform preventative maintenance in accordance with procedures.
  • Perform patching in data centres and user areas to provide end user connectivity.
  • Provide support in a constructive manner to other parties in support of WAN and/or LAN incidents/problems.
  • Provide extended cover automatically when critical faults remain open at the end of the day.
  • Produce punctual and accurate reports and statistics on all activities.
  • Create and maintain Knowledge and Configuration Databases of the whole of ESA’s Operational communications infrastructure.
  • Administer and keep up to date the IP address database for subnets using Vital QIP DNS and/or other tools.
  • Provide the 1st line support team with operational procedures, handover documentation and training for new/or enhanced systems.
  • Work closely with engineering department to familiarise the team with new systems, ensure an adequate handover, training and documentation for both 1st and 2nd line teams.
  • Ensure outages are minimised by system implementation standards and procedures.
  • Supporting occasional activities as requested (e.g. LEOP), outside of the normal working hours.
  • Actively participate in recommending technical and procedural improvements to the benefit of the service.
  • Preparation, support and implementation of planned and scheduled changes.
  • Ensuring service interruptions are minimised during planned activities.
  • Adhere to current site procedures (technical, environmental, safety and security).

Successful Candidate

Do you think you are the person we are looking for? See below what experience or knowledge you should bring:

  • Proven experience of systems, routine and contingency procedures within a large multi-platform communications environment, particularly using Cisco routing and switching equipment and firewalls.
  • CISCO CCNA required, CCNP is an advantage.
  • Current LAN and Routing technologies & protocols (STP, HSRP, OSPF, BGP, VRFs).
  • Firewall/IDS technologies. (Cisco ASA).
  • Current Cisco Enterprise Switches and Routers, Network Sniffers (Wireshark). Cisco Prime, Cisco LMS, QIP DNS, Cisco CSM, HP NNMi.
  • Experience with Cisco ACI would be an advantage.
  • Organisational and time management, report writing, and strong service ethic.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation and the ability to work in a team are very important.
  • Good analytical skills and incident resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of IT Service Management processes and good practice (such as ITIL), in particular in the areas of incident, problem and change management.
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office products
  • Good knowledge of English both written and spoken
  • Team player with a friendly nature and an openness to share knowledge with others.
  • CISCO CCNA required, CCNP is an advantage.

About Serco

Serco is responsible for the Network Operations Centre (NOC) services at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC).The Network Operations Centre provides the 24h/7 remote operations services of the ESTRACK ground station network. As part of this service, Serco provides the first line Operations Control Centre (OCC) maintenance and operations services at ESOC. 

We manage the Operational Computer and Communications Infrastructure and ESTRACK ground stations for the European Space Agency at European Space Operations Centre (ESOC). This infrastructure supports operational and support systems including Ground stations, Mission Control, Flight Dynamics, Simulators, Mission analysis, general  support, Firewalls, Network and systems management facilities and Operational communications network for data and voice services
