ICT Infrastructure Engineer

Dedicated to the European Space Agency’s Earth-observing activities, ESA-ESRIN is the European centre of excellence for exploitation of Earth observation missions. The mission and payload operations of ESA's Earth observation satellites are managed here, and ESRIN is the primary source for the acquisition, distribution, and exploitation of data from these and other non-ESA satellites.

Serco Italy has a long history of providing Earth Observation operations, maintenance and front-end services to ESA. To provide continual service improvement, Serco has recently introduced a special focus on evolution and innovation, with the aim of supporting ESA in further evolving the services and products.

Role Responsibility

As part of a team working for major international organisation you will have the opportunity to bring your knowledge of security ( hardware related), networking and infrastructure domains to the used to validate, explore and support all issues relating to infrastructure. Working in a dynamic and international environment.   

The scope of work include:

  • Collecting and analyzing user requirements.
  • Supporting the technical evaluation, design, and procurement of new ICT and security technologies and solutions.
  • Supporting the coordination of the activities aimed to implement and transfer to operations ICT and security services.
  • Providing engineering support to ICT and security services either under development or in operation.
  • Supporting the acceptance of third-party service deliveries.
  • Monitoring, assessing, and reporting on the third-party service performance and deliverables, and identifying areas of improvement.
  • Assessing and verifying the compliance of systems and services design with applicable policies, requirements, and processes.
  • Supporting Data Centre operations, also by coordinating technical interfaces and activities, and providing relevant documentation.
  • Delivering reports, procedures, benchmarks, cost analyses and other requested documentation.

Successful Candidate

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • A university degree or equivalent qualification, preferably in Telecommunication Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Good understanding of ICT infrastructure and security services (e.g., e-mail, name service, network management, virtual private networks, remote access services, strong-authentication mechanisms, intrusion detection and prevention, content inspection, firewalling).
  • Experience with the design and/or deployment of ICT and security solutions (e.g., routing, switching, Data Centre, firewall) in large infrastructures.
  • Interpersonal and organizational skills, team working capabilities, time management skills, analytical thinking and a problem-solving aptitude.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:

  • Experience with Software Defined Network technologies (e.g., Cisco ACI).
  • Experience with Public / Private / Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure services and relevant solutions (e.g., VMware, Openstack).
  • Knowledge of main hypervisors (e.g., VMware) and network virtualization (e.g., NSX)
  • Familiar with operating systems (e.g., Linux, Photon OS) and middleware (e.g., webservers, databases).
  • Experience with Containers (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker).
  • Familiar with security standards (e.g., ISO27000 series).
  • Networking / infrastructure certifications (e.g., Cisco, VMware, RedHat).
  • Small projects coordination skills.
  • Experience/Knowledge in the design, implementation, and migration of PDGS architecture based on Kubernetes (K8s).
  • Experience/knowledge of micro-services systems, cloud native applications using container and cloud orchestration technologies.
  • Knowledge of machine learning, optimization problems and artificial intelligence techniques for advanced PDGS automation.
  • Pro-activeness, good communication skills, team player.
  • Result-oriented.
  • Capacity to work autonomously.
  • Capacity to generate good documentation.
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to complete complex tasks with minimal guidance and to work and cooperate with others.
  • Experience/knowledge on service/operations best practices (ITIL), management and processes.
  • Ability to coordinate end to end activities and teams.
  • Ability to take ownership and manage end to end problems.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
