Dedicated to the European Space Agency’s Earth-observing activities, ESA-ESRIN is the European centre of excellence for exploitation of Earth observation missions. The mission and payload operations of ESA's Earth observation satellites are managed here, and ESRIN is the primary source for the acquisition, distribution, and exploitation of data from these and other non-ESA satellites.
Serco Italy has a long history of providing Earth Observation operations, maintenance and front-end services to ESA. To provide continual service improvement, Serco has recently introduced a special focus on evolution and innovation, with the aim of supporting ESA in further evolving the services and products.

Main Responsibilities

This activity is intended to provide support to the European Space Agency (ESA) on EarthCARE scientific ground-processor development, verification, validation and testing.
As EarthCARE Ground Processor Engineer you will be responsible for:
- Support and assistance to the SPPA EarthCARE data quality manager, PDGS development manager and the EarthCARE project:
- Processor support communication between developers, EarthCARE project, SPPA and PDGS (in phases D and E1 using collaborative tools made available by the EarthCARE project)
- Reviews within EarthCARE processor development
- Planning and Preparation of documentation for the phase E2 data quality activities (including processor maintenance and evolution as well as product monitoring)
- Support the EarthCARE Project for the testing and acceptance of EarthCARE Level 1 and Level 2 ground processors. Testing is considered white-box testing, i.e., an understanding of the processing algorithms and detailed working of the processors shall be acquired
- Review of technical, scientific and managerial documentation from various sources: ESA, Industry/Developers, Mission Experts, etc.
- Participation in Ground Segment Reviews and PDGS reviews organised either by ESA or by Industry and management support to the management of review item discrepancies, system or software problem reports and actions linked to processor development, testing and acceptance activities
- Generation of technical notes whenever needed during the relevant project phases
- Support to TDS (test data set) generation
- Support to the definition of processor release management procedures for the different mission phases and support to processor release management itself, particularly steps between delivery by the developers (within the CARDINAL, ECS-L activities etc.) and acceptance by the PDGS for release.
- Participate in progress and planning meetings relevant to the tasks
- Participation and support the EarthCARE Mission Advisory Groups and Quality Working Groups upon request
- Ad-hoc development of tools in support of the mentioned tasks
- Workshop planning

Successful Candidate
Your skills:
- University degree or equivalent qualification, preferably Remote Sensing and Earth Observation related;
- Good understanding of and background in geophysical sciences and/or specific instruments relevant to the EarthCARE mission;
- Experience in retrieval algorithm and operational processor development;
- Experience in data quality control and product validation;
- Programming skills (C/Fortran for understanding the existing scientific processor code, Python to develop tools for the accomplishment of the engineering, testing and validation activities, Linux operating system, bash scripts);
- Knowledge of git, Docker, C++ would be an asset;
- Fluent English language (oral and written);
- Autonomy in writing technical notes, specifications and reports in English;
- Good inter-personal skills and team spirit;
- Knowledge of the ESA Earth Explorers missions (and instruments) and processes related to their PDGS development would be an asset.
