Database Administrator (Oracle Exadata)

Role Responsibility

For our client, the European Central Bank (ECB), we are looking for a Database Administrator with Exadata.

The main objective of the position is to provide 1st and 2nd level support of Database services. Depending on skills of the candidate, this might over time extend to the cover also Unix and/or Windows server environment.

Main tasks

  • Investigate, diagnose and resolve system incidents and problems using available tools and referring to external suppliers if required;
  • Perform root cause analysis of all Data Centre infrastructure events resulting in service interruption and proactively involve other IT teams and business areas to identify solutions;
  • Propose automated event response solutions;
  • Proactively identifies and proposes improvements to services, technologies, processes and documentation in order to increase system availability, stability and improve customer experience;
  • Propose and develop solutions to improve operational efficiency of system administration team as well as Data Centre section;
  • Provide knowledge transfer to other colleagues in the Data Centre section and ensure accurate and up-to-date technical documentation related to systems operated by Data Centre section is available;
  • Deploy, configure, support development, test, pre-production and productions systems and environments, integrating business applications under development with the standard infrastructural components and documenting installation and operational procedures for further deployments in Data Centre Operations;
  • Complete assigned tasks by agreed deadlines and at high quality;
  • Contribute to the deployment of IT solutions in production by advising on the production impact of planned changes, assisting other team members in Data Centre Operations during the rollout and post implementation;
  • Supporting design and preparation of recovery and contingency exercises to ensure system recovery in accordance with the predefined plans and documentation;
  • If required support service development processes by executing technical transition: acting as single point of contact for project teams, ensuring required resource requirements are understood and timely communicated to respective team leader, planning, preparing and executing technical transition tests;

Additional desirable technical competencies and experience:

  • Oracle 11g and 12c databases functionalities (Multitenancy; Data Guard, Oracle ASM, Oracle Grid Control, RMAN, Oracle Data Pump, Transportable Tablespaces);
  • Supporting, administering and maintaining Oracle Exadata environments;
  • Supporting, administering, maintaining or engineering Solaris 10 or higher server systems (including Solaris virtualization technologies and Solaris Cluster administration);
  • Supporting, administering and maintaining Linux Redhat 6.x or higher server systems;
  • Supporting, administering and maintaining Windows 2008 R2 or higher server systems;
  • Experience with packaging technologies;
  • System monitoring and alert;
  • Performing preventive or remedial maintenance;
  • Deployment, configuration and support of development, test, pre-production and productions systems and environments;
  • Evaluating and executing changes and service requests according to provided operating procedures while maintaining agreed service levels and deadlines;
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date technical, configuration management, inventory and troubleshooting documentation related to business applications and systems;
  • Assisting in development of standards for deployed system hardware, OS and software components;
  • Planning, preparation and documentation of maintenance activities (such as hardware firmware, OS and software upgrades);
  • Supporting design and preparation of recovery and contingency exercises to ensure system recovery in accordance with the predefined plans and documentation;
  • Operating and troubleshooting Tivoli backup systems;
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint);
  • Understanding of network and storage concepts, technologies and equipment;

Successful Candidate

  • The Ideal Candidate should have at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • The ideal candidate should have proven experience with Oracle Exadata.

Generic technical competencies

  • Relevant experience working with Oracle databases: Oracle hardware maintenance and troubleshooting - installation, support, administration and maintenance of mission-critical production Oracle 11g and 12c databases - migration and upgrade techniques between different Oracle database versions and OS platforms - Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c for organisation-wide management of Oracle database systems (monitoring, performance management and tuning) - SQL, PL/SQL, and scripting;
  • Relevant experience working with Unix and/or Windows systems, server virtualisation, task automation and scripting;
  • Experience operating mission-critical IT infrastructure environments, e.g. in financial service, IT hosting or defence industries, working in mixed operating system and database environments (managing technical service transition, creation and maintenance of support documentation;
  • Good understanding of and experience working with ITIL processes, particularly change, incident and problem management;
  • Very good command of English with proven drafting ability;
