Data and Database Engineer

Serco is seeking candidates to be integrated within our team supporting the European Space Agency providing specialized software development and maintenance services and tools to access and retrieve observations and data from ESA's space science missions.

Role Responsibility

As Data and Database Engineer you will concentrate your activities on the following:

 

  • Perform data modeling and database logical design for science archives
  • Prepare technical notes comparing different database technologies based on the state-of-the-art
  • Install and configure database management software (DBMS) and ad-hoc applications.
  • Ensure availability, security and integrity of large databases.
  • Resolve database performance, capacity, replication, and other distributed data issues.
  • Develop and implement database maintenance plans, including performing integrity checks, updating statistics and monitoring hardware resource utilization.
  • Establish regular backups of databases and archive logs in coordination with the local Science IT Unit
  • Schedule and manage jobs for data transfers and monitor performance and impact on operations.
  • Participate in application development processes and code reviews.
  • Participate in database related conferences (e.g. PGConf)
  • Analyze long-term database performance trends to optimize database and application performance.

Successful Candidate

Main qualifications:

 

  • Software development experience oriented towards databases, with experience in Java and Python programming languages
  • Demonstrated experience with spatial extensions (e.g. q3c, postgis, pgsphere)
  • Advanced knowledge of Oracle, PostgreSQL and Greenplum or other parallel Databases
  • Experience in applying Machine Learning and Big Data techniques to large datasets in operational systems
  • Experience working with Linux Operating Systems
  • Java and Python programming languages
  • SVN, git repositories and project management software JIRA and Confluence
  • Agile, SCRUM and DevOps practices
  • Science and/or ESA science missions knowledge would be an asset
