As Big Data Analyst for Copernicus Geospatial Data you will be responsible for:

The consultant will work on activities included in Unit I03 Work Programme and will be expected to contribute to all the tasks listed below:

Technical evaluation of big data solutions for geospatial data

  • The expert shall work on the technical evaluation of big data solutions applicable to the different domains of Copernicus and in particular regarding the evolution of the Copernicus Data Information and Access Services (DIAS) towards Copernicus Integrated Data Management. In that context, the consultant shall contribute to the drafting of technical reports with the required level of confidentiality. This task entails the participation to meetings and working groups organised by DEFIS, the European Space Agency (ESA), or other partners.The expert might also be asked to assess and test the interoperability and portability of ICT solutions and methodologies in a big data environment. Furthermore, the expert may be asked to develop a forward vision on the challenges of the 'Big Data era' as well as on the concept, implementation, and evolution of Copernicus Integrated Data Management. This will entail the surveying and monitoring of data analytics and reference development environments from existing open source data and software relevant to Copernicus as well as the fostering of the adoption of open source and FAIR data analytics to secure transparency, reproducibility, and accountability while easing the path from new applications and service prototyping to operational services.

Data processing environments

  • To secure continued hands-on expertise and knowledge required for a sound technical evaluation of big data solutions, the consultant shall support the BDAP project team in further developing the services of the JRC Big Data Analytics Platform (BDAP) with focus on open source cloud native technologies while taking into account the applicable security requirements.

Documentation of work

  • Besides the production of technical reports regarding the shaping, implementation, and evaluation of Copernicus Integrated Data Management, the consultant shall document procedures, routines, scripts, configurations, and results in the BDAP project wiki and code repositories. All developments and deployments should be conducted in a programmatic way to secure that the different environments can be replicated and evolved in a controlled way.

Successful Candidate

Your skills: 

  • Technical knowledge about cloud platforms, ideally regarding geospatial data such as the Copernicus Data and Information Access Services (DIAS) platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms and open source software for cloud native technologies, e.g. Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Linux environments, including scripting and automated system/service deployment.
  • Experience with at least one data intensive application domain.

General skills

  • Autonomous and accurate working style.
  • Very good knowledge of English.
  • Capacity to deliver high-quality technical reports in English.
  • Capability of integration in a multicultural/international environment, rapid self-starting capability and experience in working in team.
