Main Responsibilities
The candidate should provide support to all Ground Segment Monitoring and Routine Operations, ranging from the operation of the OP5 / Nagios monitoring of the operational ground segment infrastructure and facilities, to the analysis, design, development, testing and maintenance of the monitoring of distributed hardware and system software platforms. This includes the setting-up and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, the technical documentation of the monitoring systems, and the coordination with internal customers for further improvement of the monitoring systems.
The candidate should perform the following tasks:
- Implementation, configuration and maintenance of the OP5 / Nagios monitoring systems;
- Monitoring EUMETSAT’s systems including:
- Installation and configuration of monitoring agents and plugins on clients;
- Development of new scripts/plugins if required;
- Creation and update of custom graphical views representing the system status from geographical/physical/logical/functional/business perspective;
- Implementation of corresponding changes on OP5 servers;
- Monitoring of the system performance, investigation into HW and system SW problems and performance of the relevant corrective actions;
- Ensuring that in case of HW or system SW failures in the monitoring systems the operational configuration can be restored, including the definition, maintenance, performance of backup procedures;
- Liaison with internal customers for the request and follow up of maintenance interventions and monitoring improvements;
- Liaison with OP5 support to open and follow cases related to anomalies, clarification questions, or request for changes;
- Implementation and maintenance of scripts and/or procedures where applicable for the automated and/or controlled execution of the above activities, generation or update of technical documentation in relation to system upgrades.
In the performance of the activities, the candidate should follow the relevant configuration control and change management processes in place at EUMETSAT.
Successful Candidate
Essentials
In addition to having a University degree in Computer Science (or equivalent), the candidate should have extensive experience in the administration and troubleshooting of distributed monitoring systems. The experience should have been made in an operational or production environment, characterized by custom applications in addition to standard software, running both on the client and server side, and by high availability requirements.
Proven knowledge and hands-on experience with the following is mandatory:
- Minimum 3 years’ experience with OP5 and Nagios administration;
- Minimum 5 years’ experience with Linux (Red Hat or SLES);
- IT System design skills;
- Experience in an operational or production environment characterized by complex architecture and High Availability requirements;
- Good security knowledge;
- Preparation of technical documentation in English in a complete and clear manner.
Experience in the installation, administration and troubleshooting on some of the following shall be considered as an advantage:
- VMWare Virtualization;
- Solaris;
- AIX;
- Microsoft Windows Server;
- Backup and recovery systems.
The candidate should have an expert knowledge and a significant work experience of OP5 and Nagios monitoring systems and should be familiar, to the extent required by the performance of the above tasks, with as many as possible of the following:
- TCP/IP and related network protocols and applications, e.g. LDAP, NFS, DNS, SNMP, HTTP, FTP, SSH, NTP, etc;
- High Availability software like Red Hat HA, Veritas Cluster or any other as well as Cluster/Distributed File Systems.
The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills together with the ability to effectively cooperate within the team and with internal customers.
The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the candidate should be able to work effectively in this language, together with good communication skills.
