Role Responsibility

For our activities at the European Space Operations Centre, we are currently seeking to employ a highly motivated and enthusiastic UNIX Administrator to work in an exciting innovative international environment.

The role will be part of a Network Operations Centre (NOC), responsible for providing 1st and 2nd line IT support to the ESA space missions and its users.

The NOC provides Ground Operations, Operational IT and Operational Control Centre services and acts as single point of contact for real-time service requests from ESTRACK customers.

As UNIX Administrator you will concentrate your activities on the following:

  • Operating system installation and configuration.
  • Diagnosis, reporting and correction of system software faults/user problems.
  • Planning, preparation, testing and implementation maintenance activities (such as patches and software upgrades)
  • Interfacing with 1st and 3rd line support, and other internal 2nd line support teams.
  • Installation, testing and inventory of new software packages and releases.
  • Application configuration/tuning.
  • Auditing and accounting.
  • Maintenance of in-house software/documentation.
  • Supporting occasional activities as requested (e.g. LEOP), outside of the normal working hours.
  • Implementation, maintenance and operation of automatic software updates and OS installation.

Successful Candidate

  • Very good command of English.
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office products.
  • ITIL qualifications an advantage.
  • Strong service ethos & customer facing skills.

Required Skills:

  • Hands-On experience (1-3 years) in CLI based Server OS Administration using SuSE Linux (SLES) and/or Redhat Linux (RHEL).
  • An understanding of storage, networking and scripting concepts.
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office products.
  • Good knowledge of English both written and spoken.
  • Team player with friendly nature and a willingness to learn.
  • Strong service focus and customer facing skills.

Desirable Skills:

  • Virtualisation Environments (ESX / VCloud Director) + associated provisioning / life cycle management (Autoyast / Kickstart).

  • Hands on experience with enterprise level hardware.

  • Basic database administration skills (MySQL / MariaDB).
  • Experience with NetBackup.
  • Knowledge of IT Service Management processes and standards (such as ITIL), in particular in the areas of incident, problem and change management.
  • CompTIA Linux+, LPIC1 or similar qualifications.

About Serco

Serco is responsible for the Network Operations Centre (NOC) services at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC).The Network Operations Centre provides the 24h/7 remote operations services of the ESTRACK ground station network. As part of this service, Serco provides the first line Operations Control Centre (OCC) maintenance and operations services at ESOC. 

We manage the Operational Computer and Communications Infrastructure and ESTRACK ground stations for the European Space Agency at European Space Operations Centre (ESOC). This infrastructure supports operational and support systems including Ground stations, Mission Control, Flight Dynamics, Simulators, Mission analysis, general  support, Firewalls, Network and systems management facilities and Operational communications network for data and voice services
