Job Introduction

Serco is a leading Space Services Provider with thousands of skilled resources that has supported over 50 space missions on behalf of more than 10 Space or Government agencies around the globe, including the ESA and NASA. Serco offers space capability across the full space lifecycle from satellite testing to launch services, LEOP to spacecraft operations, space surveillance to data management, and supporting downstream application development.

We’re looking for a System Architect, to reinforce the team in our Italy office!

The successful candidate will lead the design and evolution of our complex, distributed systems. In this role, you will define the architectural vision and ensure that our systems are scalable, reliable, and high-performing. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to align technology with business goals, playing a key role in shaping the long-term technical direction of the organization.

Main Responsibilities

  • Design and evolve system architecture for distributed, scalable, and high-performance platforms
  • Lead architectural reviews and provide technical direction to development teams throughout the project lifecycle
  • Document architectural decisions and system designs clearly and effectively for both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Define architectural standards and guidelines that align with business goals and European frameworks such as the European Data Spaces
  • Ensure interoperability, data sovereignty, and secure data exchange across systems and organizational boundaries
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and data teams to translate business needs into robust technical solutions
  • Evaluate and select technologies, tools, and platforms that support long-term architectural goals
  • Stay current with industry trends and regulatory developments, particularly in the context of European digital and data strategies
  • Support integration with external systems and platforms, ensuring compliance with interoperability and data-sharing standards

Successful Candidate

Your skills:

  • 8+ years in software engineering or systems design, with at least 3 years in an architecture or lead engineering role
  • Proven experience designing distributed, scalable, and secure systems—ideally in cloud-native or hybrid environments
  • Experience with cloud platforms, containerization and microservices architectures
  • Strong ability to describe, document, and explain architectural decisions clearly and concisely
  • Experience in creating technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and design specifications for diverse audiences
  • Knowledge of  European data frameworks such as Common European Data Spaces, GAIA-X, IDSA (International Data Spaces Association) standards is an asset

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and collaborating with stakeholders across engineering, product, and compliance
  • Ability to communicate architectural decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Track record of mentoring engineers and guiding teams through architectural transitions or modernization efforts

Certifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Certifications such as TOGAF or similar enterprise architecture frameworks
