Role Responsibility

For our activities in EUMETSAT, we are currently looking for a Copernicus Climate Change Service Atmospheric Sounding Engineer.

The tasks of the key person will include:

  • Import and implementation of:
    • microwave sounder correction software provided by CM SAF;
    • infrared sounder software, including updated calibration and uncertainty quantification methods provided by the FIDUCEO project;
  • Scientific analysis of:
    • the meta data and raw data quality for the additional historical HIRS instruments;
    • infrared and microwave FCDRs quality including uncertainty estimates employing quality monitoring procedures, e.g., the Virtual Observatory and other validation techniques and data as appropriate;
  • Support to the acquisition and archiving of all infrared and microwave sounder instrument data;
  • Acquisition of relevant data from internal and external sources to support product quality monitoring;
  • Support to the preparation of data records for the submission to the C3S CDS and ingestion into the EUMETSAT Data Centre;
  • Compilation of relevant data record documentation including validation reports, user guides and format descriptions;
  • Compilation of presentations and reports for the reporting to C3S and participation in C3S progress meetings as required.

Successful Candidate

Essentials

 

The key person shall have a University degree in a relevant natural science subject.

The key person shall have in-depth knowledge and proven experience in:

  • Use of atmospheric sounder data for climate monitoring;
  • Measurement uncertainty analysis principles and methods;
  • Time series analysis methods applicable to satellite data;
  • Radiative transfer in the infrared and microwave spectral range;
  • Implementation and use of software for delayed mode processing of satellite data;
  • Programming using C/C++ or Fortran 95 (and higher) programming languages as well as scripting languages, such as Python, Perl, Shell;
  • Working in unix/linux environments;
  • Data formats such as NetCDF-4, HDF5, GRIB, BUFR and the decoding of historical data formats.

 

In addition the key person shall have:

  • Strengths in analysis, synthesis and presentation of results;
  • Excellent technical writing skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and team working skills;
  • Excellent command of English in both writing and speaking.

 

Desirables

 

Experience in the following would be a distinct advantage:

 

  • Use of data bases such as MySQL and Oracle;
  • Calibration of infrared and microwave satellite instruments;
  • Basic understanding of System Engineering Concepts;
  • Processing and monitoring of large volume of remote sensing data;
  • Familiarity with operational procedures for software verification and validation;
  • Operational product processing environments.

 

The key person shall be able to conduct all activities in an orderly and structured manner, shall be able to work calmly and correctly and must be able to work without supervision.
