GIS Developer (L5)

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a GIS Developer, based in Italy.

Role Responsibility

The post-holder will focus on the below main responsibilities:

  • Identify policy-relevant information and indicators and upload and publish this through the BIOPAMA Reference Information System (RIS)
  • Analyse priority policy documents and extract conservation targets that can be monitored with SMART indicators (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound).
  • Document this process to allow others to do the same in their own regions across the ACP countries
  • Intensify the capacity of the regional stakeholders in publishing policies, targets and indicators in the RIS.
  • Communicate successful outcomes on conservation targets using data visualisation tools and story maps.
  • Ad-hoc GIS analysis and map production using ESRI ArcGIS and/or QGIS software
  • Write technical documentation and user guides

Successful Candidate

The successful Candidate will bring:

- Minimum 6-8 years of experience in spatial data management and online publishing, dissemination of scientific evidence and training delivery.

- Good knowledge of GIS software and tools (including but not limited to: ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, StoryMaps (ArcGIS and Open Source), gvSIG
- Good data visualisation and online cartography skills Strong thematic experience in GIS applications for biodiversity and conservation
- Excellent writing and communication skills (in English), ability to extract stories and messages from diverse datasets
- Knowledge of the European and international Legal Framework relevant for Biodiversity conservation (Convention on Biological Diversity, Aichi Biodiversity Target, European Environment Policy...etc)
- Monitoring, modelling, evaluation and reporting of ecosystem-based approach projects and programmes
- Experience in Participatory mapping and methodology in natural resource
management projects
- Experience in work on one or more countries of the ACP (Africa, Caribbean, Pacific) group of states
- Ability to work independently and deliver quality products within agreed tight deadlines.
- Capability of working in an international/multicultural environment, and the ability to participate in multi-lingual meetings (Fluent English mandatory, ability to work in another key language of ACP countries – French, Spanish, Portuguese – an advantage


Furthermore the following skills would be an asset
- Attention to detail, proactivity and positive attitude.
- Ability to engage with stakeholders and encourage data sharing, working with online communities.
- Understanding of global and regional conservation policy processes in relation to protected areas.
- Good overall communication skills
