Here at Serco we’re looking for an Engine Room Rating to join our established business in Belgium.

You’ll play a key part in supporting the marine research team on ‘Belgica II’, the new Federal research vessel of the Belgian government.

Join our team as we embark  on this new Belgian project where we will support marine research and scientific projects.  

Role Responsibility

The key person will be responsible for:

  •  To perform sea watches and maintenance works as assigned by the Engineering Department.

  •  Undertake repair and maintenance works as assigned by the Engineering Department.

  •  Responsible for the appropriate disposal of waste oil and combustible refuse under the direction and supervision of Second Engineer.

  •  Responsible for the proper handling of bilges and sludge according to the specified procedures and under the direct supervision of the Second Engineer.

  •  Assist the Engineering Department during bunkering operations (Incl. lube oils).

  •  Measure and report tank capacities to aid in the management/operation of the vessel.

  • Reporting immediately any abnormal measurements or tank conditions.

  •  Undertake regular good housekeeping/cleaning of the machinery/engine room spaces.

  •  Support whole ship requirements (i.e. crane driving, vessel mooring operations) as required by the Ship’s Management Team.

  •  Carry out any other duties as directed by Engineering Department within the individual’s qualified/trained and familiarised capability.

  •  To be fully conversant with the use of all safety equipment, emergency procedures and engine room/vessel contingency plans.

  •  Be familiar with safety routines and ensure necessary safeguards are in place before any work commences.

  •  Be Familiar with company safety management procedures - specifically:

    •  Permit to Work/Tag Out Systems

    •  Serco waste disposal procedures

    •  Shipboard Management Team

    •  Shipboard Safety Committee

Successful Candidate

The key person should have:

  •  Engine Room Rating Certificate (as a minimum)

  •  STCW Personal Survival Techniques (5 Year Refresher Course)

  •  STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (5 Year Refresher Course)

  •  STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (5 Year Refresher Course)

  •  STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft (5 Year Refresher Course)

  •  STCW Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (5 Year Refresher Course)

  •  STCW Elementary First Aid

  •  Unrestricted ENG1

  •  Passport

  •  Methodical in approach

  •  Good standard of education

Additional requirements:

  • This position is only open to Nationals who are also residents of a Member State of the European Economic Area and of Switzerland.
  • You will be subject to a security check carried out by the competent Defence services.
  • Working language of the ship is English
