Data Systems Engineer

We currently have an exciting opportunity for two Data Systems Engineers based at ESOC.

Role Responsibility

The main duties of this post will be to support the deployment, validation and operations of SSA applications, developed in the context of industrial activities.

Setup, configuration and management of DEVOPS environment for SSA systems, including automation of application deployment solution.

On-Site software development for ad-hoc R&D projects, innovation tasks, Lab projects.

The duties of this post will include:

* Automating CI/CD processes;

* Providing training in the usage of CI/CD, container orchestration and DevOps tools;

* Developing release approaches using automated, containerized deployment techniques

* Developing automation scripts, daemons, and APIs to reduce manual steps

* Analysing root causes of issues and provide corrective actions

* Evaluation of new tools and techniques to drive efficiencies

* Managing cloud infrastructure services and accounts

* Evolving system and application monitoring infrastructure

Additional tasks include (but are not limited to):

* Specification and management of software requirements

* Running the MDS software development and maintenance projects

* Deployment, testing, configuration etc.

* Support to the mission’s critical (and routine) activities

* Organisation of Software Support (SWS) on-site & environment preparation

* Perform the role of Software Coordinator

* Documentation and system reviews

* Support to regular progress meetings

* Support to 3rd Party and special projects

* Support the definition of the technical and organisational setup of the service, including SLA and costing

* Coordinate the in-house and industrial data systems team

* Assume the data system architect role for special projects

* Support to study, innovation and standardisation

* Prepare proposals

* Run approved studies or innovation works

* Support ESA as a member of international Standardisation working groups

* Support Quality Management and actively contribute to improve internal processes and tools

Successful Candidate

The successful candidate should have the following skills and experience:

Essential for the position is the following:

* University degree in a related subject;

* Development and maintenance of Mission Data Systems;

* Demonstrated experience applying DevOps tools and techniques;

* Agile/SCRUM experience;

* Software Engineering;

* Project Management;

* Requirements Management (and tools like DOORS);

* Knowledge Engineering and Quality standards;

* Engineering experience in Service Provision Data Centre and Advanced Software Applications development;

* Good knowledge of MS Office Suite and common standard applications;

* Good communication skills;

* Strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation and ability to work in a team;

* Fluent spoken and written English;

* Documentation skills and experience;

* Leadership skills/experience;

* Negotiation skills;

* Cultural awareness;

The following is desirable:

* Knowledge of the SSA systems, specifically in the area of Space Weather;

* Knowledge of advanced application deployment and automation solutions (containers, Chef);

* Knowledge of public/private cloud environments

* Knowledge of the ESOC infrastructure/operational environment;
