Dedicated to the European Space Agency’s Earth-observing activities, ESA-ESRIN is the European centre of excellence for exploitation of Earth observation missions. The mission and payload operations of ESA's Earth observation satellites are managed here, and ESRIN is the primary source for the acquisition, distribution, and exploitation of data from these and other non-ESA satellites.

Serco Italy has a long history of providing Earth Observation operations, maintenance and front-end services to ESA. To provide continual service improvement, Serco has recently introduced a special focus on evolution and innovation, with the aim of supporting ESA in further evolving the services and products.

Role Responsibility

You will be part of the Copernicus Maintenance Team as System IVV Engineer.
The Copernicus Maintenance Team manages design, development, integration, and validation activities for all system at the basis of the Copernicus services managed by Serco Italia for the European Space Agency.
The primary task is to support the design and implementation of tests. This may cover all areas of the system engineering, such as:

  • Design and execute functional and performance tests for software systems operating in the frame of the Copernicus Ground Segment;
  • Support the design and implementation of automatic unit test pipelines;
  • Review and update technical documentation to streamline the information flow from Development to Operations;
  • Analyse and optimize the configurations of COTS present in the operational environment to improve the quality of Service;
  • Perform troubleshooting analysis and resolve issues via the implementation of dedicated technical solutions;

Successful Candidate

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Capability of writing technical documentation;
  • Good knowledge in Linux Operating Systems (e.g. RedHat)
  • Good Knowledge of Database Management Systems (e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken)
  • Good knowledge in programming languages (e.g., Python);

Skills Attributes: 

  • Ability to work autonomously and under strict schedule
  • Problem-solving and creativity-oriented attitude
  • Very good user liaison capability and team-player spirit
  • Fluent in English written and spoken

Other skills:

  • Master's degree or equivalent qualification in science or engineering is required
  • Knowledge of Earth Observation satellite data product formats.
  • Knowledge of remote sensing algorithms
  • Knowledge of ESA EO missions and Copernicus programme is an asset
