We are seeking a Communication Systems & Technologies Engineer to work on our Customers Site (ESA-ESTEC) in the Netherlands. This is a fantastic opportunity to get into one of the most sought-after space agencies in the world. 

Main Responsibilities

As a Communication Systems & Technologies Engineer you will concentrate your activities on the following:

  • Support the Security Officer in running the System Security Section’s secure lab.
  • Apply and maintain Security Operations Procedures (SECOPS) in the lab.
  • Classify and control lab assets following security standards for physical access, documents and staff.
  • Handle daily lab operations like equipment clearance, visitor access, debriefings, reports and tracking actions.
  • Share security information, give training and run briefings.
  • Work with ESA Security Offices, project security officers and TEC lab coordinators.
  • Gather user needs for the secure lab and make sure they fit within security rules.
  • Help provide regular and emergency support with other security officers.
  • Update section leaders on daily tasks and suggest ways to improve lab security.
  • Suggest and support research to improve the security of ESA’s communication systems.
  • Act as Project or System Security Officer (PSSO) or back-up Security Officer if needed.
  • Help prepare tender documents for ESA R&D.
  • Follow up on technical activities and contracts.
  • Provide engineering support to ESA space projects and major European industries or operators.
  • Validate technical designs through analysis, simulations, lab tests and field trials, possibly with third parties.
  • Work on design, development and testing in technology projects.

Successful Candidate

Do you think you are the person we are looking for? See below what experience or knowledge you should bring:

  • Master's or PhD in Engineering (preferably in computer science, cyber security, telecommunications, aerospace or navigation).
  • Experience managing secure labs and handling security procedures.
  • Able to manage sensitive information linked to national or EU security.
  • Good knowledge of information security systems and best practices.
  • Familiar with RF communication systems (such as antennas, SDRs, GNSS receivers and modems).
  • Understand satellite communication systems and techniques.
  • Skilled in analysing and designing digital communication systems, including coding and synchronisation.
  • Able to use simulation tools like Matlab and programming languages like C or C++.
  • Preferably familiar with modern testing and prototyping methods for digital communication systems.
  • Confident using IT and cybersecurity tools. 
  • Certifications like CISSP, CCNA or COMPTIA+ are a plus.
  • Able to work well with ESA teams and other partners.
  • Candidates must be eligible for Security clearance from an EU Member State authority.
  • Candidates must be eligible to access to hardware/software governed by EU and US export control regulations.
