Dedicated to the European Space Agency’s Earth-observing activities, ESA-ESRIN is the European centre of excellence for exploitation of Earth observation missions. The mission and payload operations of ESA's Earth observation satellites are managed here, and ESRIN is the primary source for the acquisition, distribution, and exploitation of data from these and other non-ESA satellites.
Serco has a long history of providing Earth Observation operations, maintenance and front-end services to ESA. To provide continual service improvement, Serco has recently introduced a special focus on evolution and innovation, with the aim of supporting ESA in further evolving the services and products.

As Application Engineer, you will support the review and preparation of the documentation relevant to the indexing and storage of the main products metadata in the archives scientifically meaningful to end-users. You will also be responsible to support testing and verification activities; execute regular maintenance activities and support the configuration control and definition of the network interfaces
A part of your job will also be the execution of Transfer to Operations of service applications; the real-time monitoring and control of the end-to-end product publication chains.
You will manage service incidents and anomalies.
Using your knowledge, you will be responsible for the generation and maintenance of Operational Procedures and work instructions, and also from the linux Shell scripting for operational incidents management.
You won’t work alone, you will also interface with other groups (software development teams, PDGS teams, Copernicus SCI team, Network and Security team).
You will support the update of web contents (e.g. user guides, news publication, service web portals); support the help desk for replying to operational engineering issues.
Extraction of service statistics and generation of weekly, monthly and quarterly Operational Reports and Service Performance Reports will also be a part of your job.

You are an experienced Application Engineer and you hold a Master degree.
You have extensive in-depth knowledge in Linux Operating Systems (e.g. RedHat) and Linux shell scripting.
You also need to have good Knowledge of Database Management Systems (e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL).
You can demonstrate your experience of working in a multicultural environment and to participate in multi-lingual meetings. For this you will need an excellent written and oral command of English. French would be an asset for this position. You need to be able to work in a team and to share and acquire knowledge and to show a proactive problem solving attitude
To succeed to this position, you should also demonstrate knowledge of Earth Observation satellite data product format, remote sensing algorithms and of Copernicus Data Access Project.
