Application Architect/ Enterprise Architect/Java Developer (9087, L2)

We currently have an exciting opportunity within the European Commission in Brussels for an Application Architect/Senior Java Developer experienced in Enterprise Architecture.

Role Responsibility

  • Architecture and design of information systems
  • Review of the architecture of existing systems
  •  Design and development of component architecture and building blocks
  • Analysis of the integration of different information systems
  • Data analysis and data modelling
  • Participate in the design and implementation of architectures for the new software components
  • Manage the development and implementation of information systems common databases to meet identified business needs, acquiring and utilising the necessary resources and skills, within agreed parameters of cost, timescales, and quality
  • Participate in the testing and independent acceptance of software modules and documentation delivered by either other team members or external contractors
  • Participate in functional working groups and progress meetings
  • Prepare and maintain project and quality plans and tracks activities against the plan, provide regular and accurate reports
  • Communicating regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security
  • Manage the impact of change requests on affected systems
  • Third level support (investigate database problems, incidents handling, schedule bugs for resolution). Depending on the circumstances, the service provider may be requested to provide assistance or support in the resolution of production issues or assist in database inquiries and/or bulk configurations
  • Provide presentation of the system to all the interested parties and, when required, give customized training
  • Ensure good design and specification of working interfaces with other modules, and participate in ensuring that the interfaces actually comply with their specification
  • Analyse and document user and technical requirements
  • Writing database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary
  • Work with users to identify, specify and agree requirements

Successful Candidate

  • In-depth knowledge of Service Oriented Architecture
  • In-depth knowledge of Relational DBMS
  • In depth knowledge of applications design
  • In depth knowledge of Java Enterprise technologies
  • Good knowledge of Enterprise Architecture
  • Good knowledge of business process analysis
  • Knowledge of interoperability technology (e.g. web services, message oriented middleware, service oriented bus)
  • Good redaction skills
  • Ability to give presentations and training
  • Ability to apply high quality standards
  • Ability to cope with fast changing technologies used in application architecture and design
  • Good reporting methods
  • Commitment to excellence in professional work
  • High capability to be autonomous
  • Capability of working in an international/multi-cultural environment, rapid selfstarting capability and experience in team working, understanding the needs, objectives and constraints of those in other disciplines and functions
  • Ability to participate in multi-lingual meetings (FR-EN) and good communication skills
  • In – depth knowledge of database theory including database design methodologies
  • Good knowledge of development methodologies (e.g. RUP) and object oriented modelling (e.g. with Unified Modelling Language)

Education, experience and specific expertise:

  • Master’s level or 5 years of higher education
  • 7 years of professional expertise in the following areas: SOA, JEE/Java 8, SQL/PL-SQL and multi-user DBMS (Oracle). 
  • Proven experience with quality procedures
  • Experience in managing user groups and supporting users in concluding appropriate added value decisions for orientation of the IT developments
  • Practical experience with XML technologies
  • Experience and knowledge of any Java application server (preferably ORACLE weblogic 
  • Experience and knowledge of SQL, PL/SQL, JSP, JavaScript, HTML, JUNIT, MAVEN, JIRA, UNIX, TOAD.
