Training Officer

For our activities in the European Space Agency, we are currently seeking to employ a highly motivated and enthusiastic Training Officer to work in an exciting innovative international environment

The role will be part of a newly established Network Operations Centre (NOC) tasked with coordinating, configuring and monitoring activities related to the ESA ground segment, specifically the Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) stations of the ESTRACK ground station network.

The NOC is responsible for providing 1st and 2nd line support to the ESA space missions and its users.

It provides Ground Operations, Operational IT and Operational Control Centre services and acts as single point of contact for real-time service requests from ESTRACK customers.

 

Role Responsibility

The main tasks of the Training Officer will be:

  • Train Engineers and Operators in the relevant procedures to enable them to:
    • Configure and monitor station configurations for satellite passes as well as data transmissions and performance;
    • Provide 1st line computer and network support to all eligible users – including incident, problem, change request and user request/complaints handling;
    • Supervise and coordinate scheduled support activities;
    • Operation, fault finding and repair on the network and on active network components (CISCO) using Ethernet and TCP/IP protocols and by logging on/commanding active network components.
  • Support of LEOP (launch and early orbit) activities;
  • Develop training material and deliver courses;
  • Administer, maintain and develop the certification process to maintain and document continuous proficiency of the service teams;
  • Develop, introduce and maintain new operational procedures and documentation;
  • Support the management of the operational services;
  • Develop and coordinate on-the-job training programmes for the teams;
  • Mange and coordinate external training.

 

Successful Candidate

Applicants require a University (or similar) degree in engineering, physics or similar applicable discipline or can demonstrate extensive related professional experience.

You will require good professional experience in training operational staff in a 24/7 environment and in developing procedures and documentation for operations.

Ideally, you will have experience in end-to-end ground station systems required for spacecraft operations, antenna, RF front-end equipment, back-end TTC systems, communication equipment, M&C systems, station general support systems and preferably also in the area of space to ground communications and RF.

 

You will possess the following qualities:

      Familiarity with operational environments

      Modern training/teaching methodologies

      Calm and collected personality – able to quickly become the confident and trusted source of advise for operational staff

      Knowledge of document management / knowledge management concepts a plus

      Fluent in English, both in speech and writing

      Self-starter, able to work independently with little or no supervision

      Pro-active and confident personality with good persuasive skills

      Team-player, able to interface with technical and management personnel

      Well-organised, able to prioritise and manage several tasks in parallel

      Able to work on shifts occasionally

      Solid IT knowledge, including Linux, networking concepts and common tools and software applications

      Service mentality and solid understanding of a KPI driven service environment

      Able to write and present documentation, procedures and training material/presentations

      Sound experience and knowledge of training methodologies and supervision of team members

      PC literacy: MS Office Products, Lotus Notes, ITSM tools
