Spacecraft Controller

Our two main customers in the Darmstadt area are both the European Space Agency and EUMETSAT, with Serco being the largest on-site service provider at both institutions.

 

In Darmstadt, most of the work we do is spacecraft operations. For 2016 we anticipate further growth therefore we proactively look for university graduates / former military personnel to join our Spacecraft Control teams as a first step in their careers in Operations Engineering.

Role Responsibility

Tasks and Responsibilities

As a Spacecraft Controller you will be

  • Operating on a 24/7 shift basis all or part of the mission control system, which includes parts of the ground segment as well as the space segment;
  • Assisting in configuring and testing the operational system to support the operations;
  • Taking corrective action  as necessary in case of ground or space segment anomaly, applying the contingency/emergency procedures approved for the mission to ensure spacecraft safety and the continuity of service provision to users; 
  • Participating in other operations-related activities (small system development, procedures development or maintenance etc.) upon request of the Team Leader.

 

Successful Candidate

Requirements

  • This role is open to University graduates with a qualification in a related subject such as Aerospace Engineering, Satellite Communications, Telecommunications, Physics, Mechanical / Electrical Engineering etc.

Serco is a proud supporter of the integration of European military personnel into civilian life – a background in military communications instead of a University degree would also be considered suitable for this role.

  • Candidates must be adaptable, self-disciplined and able to work in a calm and correct manner under conditions of stress.
  • The position requires working a shift rota including nights and weekends; candidates must be able to fit in well within a small operations team.
