For support to data exploitation activities on behalf of ESA, we are currently looking for a skilled Sentinel 3 (and precursor missions) expert in the optical domain to provide support to the Earth Observation Programmes Exploitation and Services Division of ESA/ESRIN. Through this task the Contractor shall support the Agency for technical activities related to the preparation, monitoring and management of EO applied research projects carried out by external scientists or industrial teams in the context of ESA data exploitation programmes.

 

Role Responsibility

The position is for a specialist in EO remote sensing having a Ph.D. in the field of Sentinel 3 and other medium resolution optical missions for data exploitation / applications (or a minimum of 5 years of relevant work in the above mentioned domain).

Main responsibilities are:

  • Survey and document EO R&D methodologies for application developments, professional standards, format and tools;
  • Perform feasibility studies and parameter extraction from EO data;
  • Select and prepare test data sets for external teams;
  • Support the review of technical deliverables from projects;
  • Follow related software algorithms development as well as toolboxes, test them and report on development;
  • Propose new development, propose new areas for applications;
  • Provide support to the organisation and running of scientific workshops and training courses.

The specialist will work in a team of experts.

Successful Candidate

The successful applicant will hold a university degree (PhD) in Physics, Remote Sensing or similar, have an in-depth knowledge of satellite remote sensing (Sentinel 3 optical sensors and application, or precursor missions), image analysis, applications and programming and minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience. An additional knowledge of atmospheric sensors, in particular in view of exploiting S3/S5P synergies would be an asset.

Other skills:

  • Experience in sentinel data processing using ESA sentinel toolboxes;
  • Experience in data processing within a cloud environment;
  • Experience in remote sensing application domains, in particular related to medium resolution optical missions;
  • Scientific and application project management;
  • Good technical and analytical skills;
  • Good documentation writing skills;
  • Scientific programming (e.g. Matlab, C, C++, IDL, Python);
  • Ability to manage several tasks in parallel and to prioritise;
  • Capability to work in a team;
  • Pro-active approach to problem identification and resolution;
  • Experience in EO data catalogues and data ordering;
  • Experience in EO data processing within a cloud environment and processing software;
  • Experience of ESA EO missions, related science and applications;
  • High proficiency in using web tools for retrieving & publishing scientific information;
  • Experience in drafting and editing complex technical reports;
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills (in English);
  • Expert proficiency in MS Office tools, in particular Microsoft Access and Excel.
